Description
Angry and lonely in different ways, Paul and Hal – two boys living in Newark, New Jersey in the 1960s – form a lasting bond, first by fighting and then through intimate but unequal affection. Their exploits include a shoplifting scheme that goes terribly wrong, a dangerous fall while playing in an abandoned construction site, and a police raid on a gay bar. As the city decays around them, Hal’s schemes escalate toward deadly violence, and Paul’s dysfunctional family threatens to destroy his dreams of escape. Always There by Leaving is rich in incident and biting observations about class, family, sexual difference, and passionate friendships.
